The timing is the anomaly. This outflow happened while HBM supply remains sold out. SK Hynix confirmed 2024 HBM capacity was fully allocated months ago. The AI memory cycle is not softening. The fundamentals are not deteriorating. Yet capital is leaving at a pace that suggests otherwise.

This is the kind of discrepancy that warrants attention. Not because fund flows are always correct — they are frequently wrong — but because they are data. And data can be parsed. The question is: what does this divergence actually tell us?

Context: The Mechanics of Leverage

These are not ordinary equity funds. The leveraged products referenced in the report track the daily performance of Samsung and SK Hynix stock, magnified through swap structures and derivative contracts. They are short-horizon instruments designed for tactical traders, not buy-and-hold investors.

Their May launch was deliberate. The timing coincided with the HBM demand explosion. The product designers were capturing a wave: AI datacenter buildouts, NVIDIA's insatiable appetite for memory bandwidth, and a supply chain that could not keep up. The SK Hynix weight

SK Hynix accounted for 62% of the outflow — $601 million. Samsung accounted for the remaining $381 million. The SK Hynix number is the more meaningful signal. Here is why.

SK Hynix has roughly 50% of the HBM market. It was first to mass-produce HBM3E. It is NVIDIA's primary supplier. Its gross margins in Q2 2024 ran between 45% and 50%, driven by the HBM mix shift. Its PEG ratio is under 1.0. On any conventional valuation metric, this stock is not overvalued.

So why the larger outflow? One reading: SK Hynix had run up harder and faster than Samsung. The leveraged product tracked that move. When NVIDIA's stock wobbled in August, the AI trade collectively deleveraged. SK Hynix being the highest-beta memory play, took the largest hit. This is not about the HBM technology. This is about the beta of the trade.

The HBM cycle math

The bigger question is whether the August outflow is a leading indicator for the HBM cycle itself. The historical pattern of the memory sector is worth reviewing here. But here is where my skepticism starts. The expansion plans are massive. SK Hynix's M15X fab in Cheongju is a $15 billion investment. Samsung's P4 in Pyeongtaek is $22 billion. Combined capex for the two companies exceeds $50 billion in 2024. The market is planning for an AI demand curve that assumes 40%+ CAGR through 2027.

The historical precedent is not reassuring. Memory companies tend to over-invest precisely when the demand curve looks the steepest. The 2018 cycle was not caused by the absence of demand. It was caused by demand growth that was slower than supply growth. The same dynamic could repeat if AI accelerator demand is concentrated in a small number of customers who control the order flow.

The NVIDIA concentration problem

SK Hynix's largest customer is NVIDIA. Roughly 40% of its HBM revenue flows from this relationship. This is a structural concentration risk that cannot be overstated.

NVIDIA's procurement strategy is rational. It will not remain single-sourced to SK Hynix forever. Samsung is working to close the HBM yield gap. Micron has already qualified its HBM3E with NVIDIA. The current "three strong" duopoly-plus-one structure is stable, but the allocation of market share within it is not.

If NVIDIA shifts 10% of its HBM orders from SK Hynix to Samsung, the impact on SK Hynix's top line is meaningful. The leverage ETF market is capturing this before the equity market does.

If it cannot be verified, it cannot be trusted.

The verification issue here is not the technology. It is the earnings trajectory. SK Hynix's Q3 earnings report will tell us whether the current pricing power is real or a function of the tightest supply-demand balance in years.

The depreciation curve

Here is a number that is not in the headlines. The 2024-2025 capital spending is going to convert into depreciation. The standard is 5-7 years straight-line for semiconductor equipment. If capex is at record levels, the depreciation burden will hit the P&L in 2025-2026, shaving 2-4 percentage points off gross margin.

This is not a fatal problem. HBM gross margins are above 50%. The depreciation coverage is manageable. But it does mean the earnings growth will be lower than the revenue growth. That creates a potential gap between what the market expects and what the financials deliver.

The efficiency paradox

There is a subtle issue that nobody is talking about. The AI demand curve for HBM depends on the AI training efficiency. If AI model training becomes more efficient — smaller models, better algorithms, more optimization — the demand for HBM per model will decline.

This is not a distant scenario. The AI industry is moving toward more efficient training methods. The optimization could be a 2x improvement in the next two years. If the training compute requirement per model drops, the HBM requirement per model also drops.

The market is pricing HBM as a linear function of AI compute. The relationship is not linear. The actual demand depends on the efficiency of the underlying models and the architectural choices made by AI hardware designers.

The regulatory signal

The outflow also has a regulatory dimension. Korean financial authorities raised the compliance bar on leveraged products during the AI trading surge. This is worth parsing.

Regulators do not tighten in a vacuum. They tighten when they believe the market is overheated. The August outflow is partly a reaction to this regulation — a squeeze on the speculative layer of the market.

This is a sign that the Korean regulatory establishment is signaling overvaluation. Not necessarily for the underlying companies, but for the speculative instruments tracking them. The outflow is not a fundamental verdict. It is a regulatory signal wrapped in a market reaction.

The more relevant signals are not in the ETF flows. They are:

  1. HBM4 qualification cycles — Who passes NVIDIA's certification first. Samsung is the wildcard here. If Samsung closes the yield gap, the market structure shifts.
  2. DRAM/NAND contract prices in 2025 — The forward curve will tell us if the demand is sustainable or a near-term spike.
  3. The balance point for 2026 supply — If all three memory makers hit their capacity targets, the HBM market will have oversupply.

The market has a habit of pricing the future too early. The August outflow may be the first of a series of "corrective" moves that eventually creates the real bottom. Not a bottom for the AI trade — that may be premature — but a bottom for the emotional price action in these leveraged products.

The semiconductor industry has a long history of making the same mistake. The mistake is not in the technology. The technology is excellent. The mistake is in the capital allocation. The industry never learns that the cycle always turns. The question is when.
